Judicial temperament begins with respect for the law, for the people who come before the court, and for the diverse communities the court serves. Throughout my career, I have approached my work with the understanding that courtrooms are not abstract institutions, but places where real people seek resolution, accountability, and fairness during some of the most difficult moments of their lives.

My professional background has required me to listen carefully, remain patient, and engage thoughtfully with people from many different backgrounds and circumstances. I have learned that fairness is not only about reaching the correct legal outcome, but also about ensuring that every person feels heard and understands the process. Clear communication, preparation, and even-handed treatment are essential to maintaining trust in the justice system.

As a trial attorney, I have seen how powerfully court decisions can affect individuals, families, and communities. That perspective has reinforced the importance of approaching each case with humility and an open mind, evaluating the facts and the law objectively, and respecting the role of all participants—litigants, attorneys, witnesses, and court staff alike. I believe that a judge’s demeanor sets the tone in the courtroom and directly affects whether people perceive the court as fair and legitimate.

I also recognize that many members of the public—particularly self-represented litigants—may feel intimidated or overwhelmed by the legal system. I am committed to fostering a courtroom environment that is orderly and efficient, yet accessible and respectful. Patience, professionalism, and attentiveness are critical to ensuring that justice is not only done but understood.

Criminal sentencing is one of the most serious responsibilities of a judge. My approach would be grounded in the law, guided by fairness, and informed by an understanding of how court decisions affect real people.

California’s Determinate Sentencing Law provides structure and consistency, while also giving judges discretion to consider the unique facts of each case. That discretion allows a judge to carefully weigh victim impact statements, probation and pre-sentence reports, and plea agreement terms, all of which help ensure that sentencing decisions are thoughtful, lawful, and proportional.

Victims deserve to be heard and treated with respect, and their voices matter in the sentencing process. At the same time, judges must consider reliable information about the person being sentenced, including their background, circumstances, and potential for rehabilitation, as reflected in probation reports and other materials permitted by law.

Compassion and empathy in sentencing do not mean ignoring accountability. They mean listening carefully, recognizing the dignity of every person in the courtroom, and imposing sentences that are fair, appropriate, and consistent with public safety and the law. When appropriate, judges can use their discretion to craft sentences that promote rehabilitation, reduce future harm, and support safer communities.

As a judge of the Alameda County Superior Court, I would bring a steady, even temperament grounded in Compassion, Equity, Empathy, and impartiality. My goal would be to serve the community by applying the law fairly, managing cases responsibly, and ensuring that every person who enters the courtroom is treated with dignity and respect.
